A laptop loses roughly half its value in its first two years, yet its useful life often stretches past six or seven. Before the meeting: target the right model

The filtering starts in the listing, not in front of the machine. Favour business lines — ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook — built to last: reinforced chassis, durable keyboards, spare parts available years after release. The logic is the same as for a refurbished smartphone: hardware designed for corporate fleets ages far better than consumer gear. Before travelling anywhere, ask through the messaging system for:

the exact model reference (not just "ThinkPad" but "T14 Gen 3");
the real configuration: processor, RAM, SSD capacity;
a photo of the screen switched on against a white background;
the original invoice and any remaining warranty;
the reason for the sale.

The ten-minute on-the-spot routine

Battery — 2 minutes

Open the system diagnostic tool and read two numbers: the cycle count (be wary above 500) and the remaining capacity (below 80%, budget 60 to 120 € for a replacement — and deduct it from the price).

Disk and screen — 3 minutes

Check the drive's SMART status: a single reallocated sector announces a failure. Then display a plain white page and a plain black one at full brightness to spot dead pixels, stains and backlight bleed.

Plug a USB stick into every port, test the headphone jack, press every key in a text editor, fire up the webcam, microphone and speakers, and connect to Wi-Fi.

Chassis and hinges — 2 minutes

Open and close the lid several times: no play, no creaking. Look for cracks, missing screws and corrosion near the ports. A fan that roars at idle betrays chronic overheating. Finish with a real-world load test: open a dozen browser tabs and play a high-definition video. If the machine stutters or runs hot under that everyday workload, it will not survive your working days either. Bring your own USB stick, and check that the charger supplied is the original one — an undersized generic charger wears the battery out prematurely and is worth another small deduction.

Then deduct the flaws you found: 80 € for a tired battery, 40 € for an undersized SSD. Check the going rate the way you would for any popular model: sort recent comparable listings, ignore the fantasy prices that have been sitting unsold for weeks, and anchor your offer on what actually sells.
